In the US, chocolate brand Hershey’s was taken to court because dark chocolate contained harmful levels of heavy metals, US media including CNBC reported. Dark chocolate contains more heavy metals than other brands, including Lindt and Kativa, originally a Belgian brand now owned by Turkish Yildis Holding.

The complainant, a New York-based consumer, relied on a recent study by the US magazine Consumer Reports (CR), which tested 28 varieties of dark chocolate for lead and cadmium. The study says that 23 species have “relatively high levels” of these heavy metals. “If an adult eats one ounce (28 grams) per day, he will be exposed to levels of these heavy metals considered harmful by health authorities,” it said.
‘Hershey’s Special Dark’ and ‘Lilly’s 70%’ bars are especially high in lead, and ‘Lilly’s 85%’ is high in cadmium.
According to the complainant, Christopher LaSassaro, he was misled by the producer. He says that if he had known this, he would not have bought the goods. The man went to court in New York earlier this week seeking $500 million in damages.
Hershey has yet to respond.
