After a long search for a successor to the Big Three – Federer, Nadal and Djokovic – it seems that the crown prince has appeared with Carlos Alcaraz. The 19-year-old Spaniard can put more and more convincing arguments on the table.
With his impressive 6-3, 6-2 victory in the final of Indian Wells, he became the youngest ever winner of a ‘fifth Grand Slam’. Daniil Medvedev, who has not lost in 19 matches since February, had no chance against Alcaraz.
The Spaniard is also the first player since Roger Federer in 2017 to win the tournament without dropping a set. Along the way to his 100th ATP Tournament win, only John McEnroe has managed faster.
To add to his final victory, Alcaraz also dethroned Novak Djokovic once again to become world No. 1. The Spaniard had lost that place after he had to skip the Australian Open due to injury.
However, Djokovic could not defend his chances, as he was not allowed to enter the United States because he had not been vaccinated against COVID-19. The Serbian player will also not appear in the Miami tournament.
“This is another dream come true,” Alcaraz said. “It’s a great feeling to be up against great players like Novak. This tournament was perfect.”
