Angry farmers continue to drive tractors around Berlin's government district. Even yesterday there were widespread protests against proposals to abolish fuel subsidies for farmers.
There were about 330 tractors and other farm vehicles on the street leading to the famous Brandenburg Gate this morning. According to the police, there was a constant coming and going of activists.
Two new demonstrations were announced today, one of them organized by a farmers' organization from the surrounding German state of Brandenburg. Several convoys joined this morning. To top it all off, there was a protest organized by the farmers' organisation, which started last night.
Yesterday morning, several thousand tractors – and many demonstrators – marched into central Berlin to protest the reduction in fuel subsidies proposed by the government of Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The Schulz government wants to reduce the budget deficit in this way. The proposal has already been watered down, with an equal phase-out within three years. However, farmer organizations want more.
