A migrant boat with about 40 people on board disappeared in the Mediterranean Sea after leaving Libya last week. This was reported by the Italian Coast Guard.
The wooden boat was last seen near the island of Malta on Friday from a plane belonging to the European border control agency Frontex. In addition to Coast Guard boats and aircraft, commercial ships sailing in the area are also participating in the search operations.
According to relief organizations, between 35 and 46 people left by boat. The destination will be the Italian island of Lampedusa, which is one of the centers of migration from Africa to Europe. However, the boat never arrived and rescuers feared he had drowned.
Fatal accidents regularly occur on the illegal migration route across the Mediterranean. The boats often carry people fleeing war and poor living conditions in their home countries in the hope of a better life. They pay large sums of money to people smugglers to cross on overcrowded, flimsy boats.
