2021 was an eventful year for the DSM, with more riders leaving the team, like Benoot and Van Wilder, because they could no longer agree with the philosophy (for testimonials on this: see Read More).
“We haven’t really had the best season with the guys,” coach Rudy Kemna admits. “But our philosophy will not change.”
His colleague Roy Curvers also admitted that not everything is so sweet and bright. “I’m not proud of last season. But sometimes that helps change things. We want to create an environment that is inspiring and motivating. But the philosophy will always be the same.”
In addition to Benoot and Van Wilder, the DSM also said goodbye to Australians Hindley and Storer. Henry Vandenabel is now the only Belgian on the squad, coming from the DSM coaching staff. John Degenkolb, who failed somewhat in Lotto, is the most striking newcomer.
“It feels like going home,” says the 32-year-old German, who’s driven some of the early DSM ancestors for years. “I enjoyed the team atmosphere at the time and still feel the same spirit, despite the presence of many new faces. I am already looking forward to the first training camp. We will create a unique group.”
