The Pentagon said a new unit of American soldiers arrived in the Afghan capital, Kabul, on Saturday to help ensure the evacuation of American and Afghan civilians.
A first group of Marines did arrive on Friday. According to Fox News, up to 3,000 troops are expected to be in Kabul by the end of the weekend to evacuate diplomatic staff, as well as Afghans who worked with the Americans and feared Taliban reprisals.

Approximately 42,000 people still work at the US Embassy. Washington wants to remove up to “thousands a day”. According to CBS, everyone should be evacuated from the embassy by the middle of next week. Meanwhile, many individuals are also left behind to destroy documents, electronic devices, American flags and other items that could be misused in propaganda. According to multiple US media, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday were briefed by the national security team on the situation in Afghanistan.
