Climate activist Annona de Wever is under fire on social media after criticizing Gert Verholst. She described him as “a straight old white man who totally downplays the climate crisis and gives an opinion on something he has absolutely no knowledge of”. That did not go well, including with Minister of State for Asylum and Immigration Sami Mahdi (CD&V). And he made no bones for him.
Anuna De Wever lit the fuse when she shared an article on Twitter from De Morgen newspaper, in which Verhulst spoke out against her. He accused her of “picking” the green in the previous elections and that her climate rallies were a “poisoned gift” to the party.
According to Verhulst, the climate can be saved, but by only sending killer messages you create the exact opposite effect. In the long run, no one will wake up. Give us perspective, solutions and possibilities. If the sea level is going to rise, let’s prepare for it.”
Annona de Wever defended herself this morning. “A straight white old man perfectly downplays the climate crisis and gives an opinion on something he has absolutely no knowledge of. What else is new?” which in turn sparked a wave of indignation.
Minister of State for Asylum and Immigration Sami Mahdi was not amused. Bigotry comes in many forms. Can we stop limiting a person’s opinion to age, skin colour, sexual orientation, and gender? Is that so hard?” / Woman again ‘And if you can’t see that, I think you’re part of the problem’.
Open Vld president Egbert Lachaert also disagreed. “Tip (even if he is a straight white man, I deeply apologize for that): Focus on the substantive discussion. Personal attacks will not improve the climate.”
“Wake up crazy”
N-VA Vice President Lauren Barrys spoke about “wake up the madness.” “Do you disagree with what he’s saying or can’t he say because he’s not young and trans and of color? That’s how you make the cause you’re fighting for sink into a waking frenzy.”
