China and the United States continue to work toward a meeting between Biden and Xi abroad

China and the US continue to work on a meeting between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The idea is to meet the two in San Francisco next month. Both countries say that hope is alive after hours of meetings between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and the top US government in Washington.

Wang arrived in Washington for the first time since 2018 and spoke in recent days with his US counterpart Anthony Blinken and US Defense Adviser Jack Sullivan. Wang has already spoken with Biden. In total, the meetings were held behind closed doors for more than nine hours.

The Americans expressed their concerns about tensions over the South China Sea and the situation in Taiwan. However, the Chinese minister told Biden after the talks that the country “values” Washington’s hope to improve and stabilize relations with Beijing.

Earlier, Wang said the US and China may have differences in Washington, but also common interests.
