The European Commission approved Poland’s coronavirus recovery plan after more than a year. This paves the way for 36 billion euros in grants and loans.
The approval comes after intense negotiations with Warsaw over the rule of law in Poland. However, not everyone within the Commission is convinced that sufficient efforts have been made to counter the core European criticism. The independence of the judiciary in Poland, for example, is often cited in this context.
European money should help the country, among other things, deal with the impact of millions of Ukrainian refugees on its soil. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will travel to Poland tomorrow to demonstrate her consent. It is now up to member states to give the final green light.
