First Africa Cup adventure: Cape Verde surprises Ghana with the presence of Denis Odoi and Joseph Bentsil

Denis Odoi's Ghana started the Africa Cup of Nations on the wrong foot. They suffered a dramatic defeat against Cape Verde after conceding a goal in extra time (2-1). Earlier in the day, Nigeria and Egypt were also unable to win.

Cape Verde provided its first real action in the Africa Cup. They took the lead early in the game after a rebound from Jamiro Montero and Ghana saw Majeed Ashimeru's equalizer (Anderlecht) disallowed by VAR.

Ghana managed to equalize at the end of the first half thanks to Aleksandar Dzeko. The equalizer gave courage to Denis Odoi and his teammates and Josef Bentsil (Racing Genk) made it 2-1.

In extra time, the sky fell on the heads of the Ghanaians. Errors in defense were punished by Gary Rodriguez. His goal caused a hectic scene as he celebrated the victory with the fans in the stands.

Salah must save Egypt from defeat

Earlier today in Group Two, record holder Egypt avoided embarrassment against Mozambique. Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah asserted himself two minutes later with an assist from Mostafa Mohamed, but Mozambique took the lead and beat the Egyptians in three minutes through Witty (55th) and Clecio Pauke (58th) in the second half.

Deep into extra time, Salah saved the seven-time champion's honor. Former Anderlecht striker Trezeguet was substituted on the hour mark, while Ostend midfielder Alphonse Amadi remained between the lines for ninety minutes in Mozambique.

Nigeria will also not be able to win its opening match

Nigeria were unable to finish their first match in the Africa Cup with a win on Sunday. The Nigerian national team, which is one of the most prominent candidates in Ivory Coast, tied with Equatorial Guinea 1-1 at the Olympic Stadium Alassane Ouattara in Abidjan.

Former Charleroi striker Victor Osimhen erased Eban Salvador's opener for Nigeria, but the front-runners forgot to continue the momentum.

Antwerp midfielder Alassane Youssouf was given a starting place, but, like Moussa Simon (ex-Gent), he was substituted twenty minutes before the end of the match. Paul Onuachu (ex-Genk) entered stoppage time, and the club's midfielder Rafael Onyedika did not play at all.
