Gipster gassed laying hens in its barns in the US after a slaughterhouse canceled a delivery of laying hens at the last minute.

Sandra Vijn, Gipster's USA managing director, writes on LinkedIn that laying hens contain CO2 gas. Kipster wants to slaughter the next flock of laying hens and market the meat.

Kipster opened its first station in the US in October 2022. The first white hens were set in the new Gipster barn in the US state of Indiana in mid-October 2022.

Grilled Sausage

In the Netherlands, Lidl sells grilled sausage made from meat from laying hens from Gipster stables and laying hens in Castenre (LB) and Beuningen. Gibster places great emphasis on sustainability and animal welfare and has a different business philosophy than many poultry companies in the Netherlands.

For example, Gipster's Rude Zanders, unlike many in the poultry industry, believes it is ethical to raise laying hens as long as specialized breeds such as broilers are kept for meat production. “One condition is that the laying hens are only fed with leftover runs,” Zanders told Pluimveeweb.nl in May 2022.

The gassing of egg-laying hens in Gipster barns in the U.S. is inconsistent with Gipster's philosophy, which places great emphasis on sustainability and animal welfare.
