Harry may have to hand over the titles with his US passport

If Prince Harry is serious about becoming an official American citizen, he could lose his royal titles. Various media outlets in Great Britain and the United States state that official rules require immigrants to the United States to renounce “hereditary titles or noble positions in a foreign state.”

King Charles' youngest son discussed the possibility of applying for a US passport in an interview with Good Morning America on Friday. “U.S. citizenship is definitely a thought that has crossed my mind, but right now it's not a priority for me,” he said.

It is not clear whether Harry is aware of the American rules. His spokesperson declined to comment to US Page Six.

Earl of Dumbarton

As well as being Duke of Sussex, the Prince is Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel. Harry received these titles in May 2018 after marrying his wife Meghan. In 2020, the Prince bid farewell to his title of Royal Highness. He made the meeting with his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, after the prince announced he would be taking a step back within the royal family. He also immigrated to America with his family that year.

Attorney James L. has worked on many immigration cases in the past. Leonard Jr. tells Page Six that Harry may be granted an exemption. He says there has never been a similar case and it could become a “unique” problem for the US legal system.

“I can't think of any other royals who have applied for US citizenship,” he said. “I can't imagine that there was such a scenario, and I think it raises a lot of interesting questions.”
