Officials said that Kazakhstan, one of Russia’s closest allies, has rejected a request to join forces in the Russian attack on Ukraine. In addition, the former Soviet state declared that it does not recognize the separatist states of eastern Ukraine.

On Monday, Russia announced that it recognizes the unilaterally declared Luhansk Republics (LPR) and Donetsk (DPR) as independent states. “We welcome Kazakhstan’s announcement that it will not recognize the LPR and DPR system,” the US National Security Council said in a statement. We also welcome Kazakhstan’s refusal to send its troops to join Putin’s war in Ukraine.
Kazakhstan’s refusal is remarkable. At the beginning of this year, the Russian-led military coalition sent more than 2,000 “peacekeepers” to help the Central Asian country quell protests that have left more than 200 people dead. About 10,000 people were arrested. The CSTO forces withdrew late last month after calm returned.
