Valencia – If you ever come to a Spanish supermarket as a Dutch or a Belgian, you will often see different products than in your own country. This is always an adventure, but sometimes the products are very exotic, also for the average resident of Spain. This time Mercadona offered a product for sale that people write about a lot on social media.
Mercadona recently started selling one Packaging It contains two fried eggs or “huevos fritos”. These sell for € 1.80, which is much more expensive than a pack of 6 liter eggs sold in the same supermarket chain for € 1.30, that is, six fried eggs (if you make them yourself). The package states that the eggs can then be heated in the microwave for 30 seconds.
Fried eggs are sold as the house brand huevos plancha Haciendado . So it’s not so much about “huevos fritos”, which is traditionally prepared in Spain in a generous coating of olive or sunflower oil, but about two eggs from a baking tray (plancha). The ingredients consist of two eggs, olive oil and sunflower oil, according to Basque producer Lagomar Seas. If the package is sealed, it can be stored for 2 weeks, but if the package is opened, the eggs must be eaten within 10 hours.
People on social media are laughing at this new product from Mercadona, but others are talking about something clever from Mercadona. The truth is that if the largest and most famous supermarket chain in Spain sells two fried eggs for 1.80 euros, there is no doubt that it is preceded by market research and that there is a demand for this product. Obviously, there are many people who can’t or don’t want to make fried eggs.
