North America braces for 'Arctic blast' emergency: Temperatures could drop 30°C in 48 hours | Science & Planet

The 2023/24 winter started off exceptionally mild in North America. December turned out to be the warmest month for much of the United States and Canada. Many temperature records were also broken. There was also historically little snow in North America at Christmas, making for a green Christmas in most places. The reason for this record heat and lack of snow is a high pressure area that has been over much of the US and Canada for almost the entire month.

But the period of mild winter temperatures seems to be coming to an end now. At least for a large part of the country. Part of the polar vortex will move south in the coming days, bringing significant cooling. Since January 10, a branch of the polar vortex has spread across western Canada, bringing cold air from the northwest to the southeast. When this happens, it is called an “Arctic Blast” or “Arctic Blast” in North America. This indicates a rapid influx of very cold air from the Arctic, causing a sudden and sharp drop in temperature. The cold will peak at the end of the week. In many areas, temperatures will drop by 15 to 20 °C below normal. The cold snap, with temperatures dropping by 20-30 degrees Celsius, will feel extra intense after the recent mild weeks, weather agencies said. The question is whether the eastern and southern parts of North America will also participate in the severe cold, and how long the cold will last.
