Not in New York, but in an unexpected city: Will America's New Tallest Skyscraper Be Built? | Abroad

At 541 meters, the One World Trade Center is currently the tallest building in the United States. The second, Central Park Tower (472 meters), is in Manhattan. But now plans have been announced for a new skyscraper taller than both of those. And — surprisingly — that building won't be in New York or Chicago. The project still needs approval.

The new tallest skyscraper in the United States will be 1,907 feet or 581 meters tall, forty meters taller than the One World Trade Center. It will make it the sixth tallest building in the world. The location is amazing: Bricktown, Oklahoma City's burgeoning entertainment district. “This audacious project will be the tallest building in the country and will span over 1.2 hectares and contain more than 185,000 square meters of residential, hospitality, retail, dining and entertainment,” says developer AO Architects. The complex was christened 'The Boardwalk at Bricktown'. It will include hotel and residential towers, each with its own unique luxury amenities, creating a dynamic urban center for residents and visitors,” the designers said.

The construction project will consist of three towers with a height of more than 100 meters. The fourth tower – tentatively called 'Legend's Tower' – is 1,907 feet (581 meters) tall. Not by chance, because in 1907 Oklahoma was officially recognized as the 46th state of the United States. The current tallest building in the United States, One World Trade Center, chose a symbolic height of 1,776 feet (541 meters), marking the year the American Declaration of Independence was signed.

The entire development is adjacent to the Oklahoma River and the Bricktown Canal. The neighborhood is an old warehouse district, now buzzing with life and entertainment. The project will add 1,907 apartments ranging from affordable to luxury apartments.

Oklahoma City is a surprising choice for Americans for the tallest building in the entire country. “Oklahoma City is undergoing a significant period of growth and change, which positions it well for large-scale projects like Bricktown,” said Scott Mattson, CEO of property developer Mattson Capital. “We believe this project will be an iconic destination for the city, and the expansion and diversification of a growing economy and will attract investment, new industries and jobs. We believe this is a dynamic environment and that the Boardwalk at Bricktown will become a source of pride for Oklahoma City.”

The 'Legends Tower' is the fifth tallest building in the world. The Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates is still the tallest tower in the world, standing at no less than 828 meters. In second place is the Merdeka 118 skyscraper in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, with a height of 678.9 meters. China's Shanghai Tower, 632 meters tall, got bronze. Abraj Al Bait Tower in Mecca, Saudi Arabia (601 meters) and Ping An Financial Center in Shenzhen, China (599.1 meters) round out the top five. And then the 'Legends Tower' from Oklahoma City? We have to wait and see as we have not received the building permit yet. AO Architects and Matteson Capital have applied for a variance from the city that would allow them to build outside of current zoning regulations and officially build the nation's tallest building in Oklahoma City.
