The United States will ban Russian ships from its ports due to the Ukraine war. In doing so, the country joins Canada and the EU member states, which have already taken that step.

According to President Joe Biden, the move means that any ship flying the Russian flag or owned or operated by a Russian company or individual will not be allowed to stop at a U.S. port.

From an economic point of view, the US embargo is unlikely to have major consequences. According to Reuters, a total of about 1,800 Russian ships were docked last year, according to Reuters. It may seem like a lot, but it’s only a fraction of the total shipping. Biden did extensive research before deciding whether the ban would severely affect the supply chains of US companies.

Earlier, the United States decided to ban Russian flights from its airspace. In addition, Russian oil was banned. As a result of that move, most of the shipping with Russia has already been banned. Many Russian ships arriving at US ports usually carry oil.
