US: Potato exports $2.1 billion

By 2022, US potato exports will reach $2.1 billion. Compared to 2021, volume sales decreased by 4.2%, but were higher than in 2018 and 2020 (equal to new weight). The value of US potato exports for all potato products (frozen, fresh, dried, seed potatoes and chips) increased, resulting in an 11% year-over-year increase. This growth can be attributed to global price rise and inflation.

Demand for U.S. potato products remained strong throughout 2022, indicating that the slight drop in export volume was due to tight supply. The main export markets for US potatoes were Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea and the Philippines, in descending order.

The value of U.S. frozen potato exports increased 13.8% to $1.34 billion, while volume decreased 2.5% from 2021. Major destinations for US frozen potatoes are Japan, Mexico, South Korea, and the Philippines. In 2022, the volume of US frozen exports to Japan and South Korea increased, while exports to Mexico and the Philippines decreased slightly compared to 2021.

Sales of potato products in the US increased by 9%
$287 million, but export volume, which includes both cargo and processing potato cuttings, was down 9.7%. Canada, Mexico, Japan and Taiwan were the main export markets for US new potatoes. Although new exports to most markets declined, the expansion of market access for US potatoes led to a nearly 10% increase in new exports to Mexico.

In 2022, the value of dehydrated potatoes will rise 1.1% to $217.6 million in that year. However, the volume of US exports of dehydrated potatoes decreased by 3.2%. Canada, Mexico, Japan, and the United Kingdom were the top markets for US dehydrated potatoes in 2022. Exports of dehydrated potatoes to Canada and the United Kingdom increased from 2021, while exports to Mexico and Japan decreased in 2022.

Although they represent a small portion of US potato exports, the volume of seed potato and finished potato exports in 2022 increased by 28.8% and 2.2%, respectively, compared to 2021. Export value of seed potatoes in 2022 is $16.3 million and $211.6 million. million for fries.

Throughout the year, maintaining a steady supply of US potato products was a major challenge for exports. By the end of the year, supplies of U.S. potatoes stabilized in some export markets, including South Korea and Myanmar. Global demand for U.S. potatoes remained strong despite inflation-driven U.S. commodity prices. Importers, caterers and retailers in major markets reported a preference for US potatoes over competing products, and many buyers repurchased US potatoes.
