Governor Jordan is an outspoken legislator from Ohio who has led several investigations into the Joe Biden administration. He is one of the founders of the Freedom Caucus, the far-right wing of the House Republican Caucus.
It was Freedom Caucus member Matt Gaetz who initiated the impeachment of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy earlier this week and succeeded with the support of seven other members of the party and the entire Democratic caucus. McCarthy was impeached Tuesday as the first-ever Speaker of the House.
“Jim Jordan will be a great Speaker of the House and has my full support,” Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social. In addition to Jordan, Steve Scalise, a Louisiana state lawmaker, also wants to become president.
Republicans have 221 seats in the House of Representatives, nine more than Democrats. They will hold a meeting with the presidential candidates behind closed doors on Tuesday. Voting is expected the next day. It is uncertain how united Republicans will be after McCarthy’s impeachment. He was elected president at the beginning of this year after fifteen difficult rounds of voting, the day after Trump called on his fellow Republicans to support McCarthy.
American media reported that Trump is presenting himself as interim president, but according to a former Republican member of Parliament, this is not an option because Trump faces criminal charges. According to House rules, he is therefore banned from the presidency. There are still several lawsuits pending against Trump, including over his handling of classified government documents and his attempts to overturn the election results.
