22 killed in Siberian nursing home fire | abroad

In the Siberian city of Kemerovo, 22 people died in a fire in an illegal home for the elderly. The fire broke out on Saturday night. Six people were also injured, according to the emergency services report. It is believed that the cause of the fire was improper use of stoves.

According to the Russian Investigative Committee, the wooden building was “temporary housing for people in difficult situations.” There was earlier talk of 20 deaths, but the bodies of two people are still under the rubble.

An investigation was launched due to non-observance of fire safety regulations at the center, which is located in a private building. An inspector had wanted to inspect the facility on December 7, but was refused.

The owner of the building, a priest according to news reports, was arrested and charged with violating safety regulations resulting in several deaths. According to the authorities, he did not have a license to operate the center.

The local governor called for immediate consultations between the various district mayors and their emergency management committees. He also ordered, according to the Russian state news agency TASS, to monitor all nursing homes, mainly privately owned.

In Russia, violent fires often occur because safety regulations are not taken into account. Thousands of people die as a result every year.

In Kemerovo, sixty people were killed in a fire in a shopping center in 2018, including about forty children and adolescents.
