Twenty of the nation’s largest cities have their highest heat alerts today. As of Wednesday, this alert phase has already been announced in 23 cities. In cities further north such as Florence and Bologna, temperatures range from 37 to 38 degrees.
The government warns that high temperatures can affect not only those at risk, but also those who are healthy. In Rome, the Civil Protection sends volunteers out into the streets to help people in trouble due to the heat. Water is distributed near the Colosseum and other tourist destinations.
The previous record of 40.7 degrees was from June last year. In Italy, code red is being implemented in twenty major cities due to the extreme heat. According to the government, the heat is not only a danger to the vulnerable, but to everyone in the twenty cities.
