Britain’s Queen Elizabeth made a surprise visit to Paddington train station in London. This morning she officially opened the new Elizabeth line there, named after her because of her wedding anniversary. The railway, with a length of more than 100 km, will open to passengers on May 24.
Elizabeth was accompanied by her youngest son, Prince Edward, at the opening ceremony. The arrival of the 96-year-old queen has yet to be announced. Recently, she rarely leaves Windsor Castle for formal occasions due to her walking difficulties.
They were greeted by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Mayor Sadiq Khan and Transport Commissioner for London Andy Byford. Then she met the employees who played an important role in the realization of the project, some train drivers and station employees.
A metal plaque bearing Elizabeth Lane’s name was then hung in the station’s lobby. “Her Majesty the Queen was officially inaugurated,” as shown below. Initially, the Queen was supposed to open the railway in 2018, but that was severely delayed due to problems during construction.
