Pro League CEO Lauren Barris didn’t wait long to name the consequences of the classic shutdown, with flares from the Anderlecht sector: “Here we draw the line,” he tweeted. “The Professional League imposes a fine of 50 thousand euros and the Federal Prosecutor’s Office will act.”
These penalties are the standard procedure for the Pro League if a match is (finally) interrupted. Later, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office will also deal with the case on the merits.
Anderlecht must then fear additional financial fines, but also matches behind closed doors. Of course, the defeat of Forfait must also be legally confirmed.
In a short statement, Anderlecht said they had “much understanding of supporters’ discontent, but strongly condemn these incidents”. The club wants to engage in dialogue with the fans in the coming days.
This makes it a particularly expensive penalty week for the record champion. A few days ago, UEFA imposed a fine on Anderlecht of 50 thousand euros.
UEFA decided this after riots in Europe’s away match against West Ham United. In addition, Anderlecht is not allowed to sell tickets for its next away game in Europe against Silkeborg. If fans misbehave again, a second match will be automatically added.
