Several “false” weather alerts have been broadcast on Russian television and radio after the channels fell victim to hackers. The authorities reported this on Tuesday.
The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations said that in some regions of the country “information about the activation of an anti-aircraft warning system as a result of an electronic attack was broadcast on radio and television servers.” “This information is false and does not correspond to reality,” the ministry said in a statement.
According to Russian media, the false warnings spread in the regions of Belgorod and Voronezh that border Ukraine, in the regions of Moscow and St. Petersburg and Crimea, which was annexed by Russia, among others.
The ministry went on to say that a similar cyber-attack took place last week, triggering numerous false alarms about airstrikes across Russia. According to Russian news agencies, only private radio and television stations whose transmitters were temporarily drowned out by a stronger signal were affected.
These incidents come shortly after the first anniversary of the start of the Russian attack on Ukraine on February 24, 2022. In recent months, places and infrastructure in the regions bordering Ukraine have been repeatedly hit by drones, often with disastrous consequences. Moscow attributes these attacks to the Ukrainian army.
