After his win yesterday, Jonas Vingaard rode around for the first time today in his favorite captain’s jersey. But with just a 5-second bonus on Mikel Landa, Ronde wasn’t far from a decision.
The first challenge of the day followed, as the peloton once again had to deal with a cartload of basque climbs.
After a tentative start with a series of escape attempts, a group of five riders finally got the peloton’s blessing.
Our country is represented with climber Harm Vanhoucke and Barrenetxea – leader of the Basque Country in the King of the Mountains ranking – also joining the adventure.
The latter was a successful day. A day after the breakaway, he was able to increase his lead in the minor classification.
On La Asturiana, the final climb where escapees were caught, the classification riders mixed up.
Isolated Vingegaard was soon put under pressure by Education First. After shots from Richard Carapaz, Sergio Higuita and Rigoberto Uran, the Dane decided to pass himself.
No one else could follow the yellow jersey and Vingegaard instantly made a nice difference. Landa, who was second in the standings, was the only one who could attach his chariot with some difficulty.
The duo rode together to the finish and could compete for the stage victory. There Vingegaard again proved the faster of the two in a sprint.
Having managed to gather some extra seconds in an intermediate sprint, Vingegaard is apparently more ahead of his larger rival thanks to this victory.
