The Supreme Court ruled that Trump “deprived” himself of the presidency because of his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
The Colorado court based its ruling on a rarely used clause in the US Constitution that prohibits officials involved in “rebellion or rebellion” from holding office. According to the court, Trump contributed to this by inciting his supporters on January 6, 2021, to storm the presidential headquarters. Capitol.
The ruling applies only to the state’s March 5 Republican primary. However, observers expect the ruling will also have consequences for Trump during the general presidential election scheduled for November 5. Colorado typically votes Democratic in presidential elections.
However, the court suspended the decision until the fourth of next January, in the event that an appeal is filed before that before the US Supreme Court.
Donald Trump’s spokesman, Stephen Cheung, immediately condemned the Supreme Court’s decision as “undemocratic” and announced that the case would be referred to the Federal Supreme Court to request a suspension of the decision.
