Host nation Ivory Coast starts with the win
Ivory Coast opened its 34th season by defeating Guinea-Bissau 2-0. Sekou Fofana (4.) quickly lit up the host team at the Ouattara Olympic Stadium in the capital, Abidjan. Jean-Philippe Crasseau (58) doubled the lead before the hour mark to knock out Guinea-Bissau.
Union Sint-Gillis' Jean-Thierry Lazare Amani ultimately missed out on the Ivorian selection. In Guinea Bissau, Oparin Djoko (Franks Borens) spent 90 minutes between the goals. Zinho Jano (Zolte Waregem) remained on the bench.
The next three matches are scheduled to be played on Sunday with Nigeria vs. Equatorial Guinea (3pm), Egypt vs. Mozambique (6pm), and Ghana vs. Cape Verde (9pm). Senegal are the cup holders.
