The World Health Organization confirms that the Corona virus is currently spreading rapidly in 53 countries in the European region of the Health Organization. Of all the new infections reported around the world last week, at least 59 percent came from these countries. This includes 48 percent of all reported deaths.
The number of infections in the European region has now risen for six consecutive weeks, among all age groups. GermanySlovenia and Croatia recorded their highest daily rates since the start of the pandemic on Thursday. Moreover, the number of hospital admissions in Europe doubled in a week.
According to Kluge, the development of corona numbers is a cause for “great concern”. The CEO said Europe is once again the epicenter of the pandemic.
Kluge points out that the increase is due to the easing of corona measures and the lack of vaccination coverage.
“We need to change our tactics,” the WHO director said. Rather than taking action when the number of infections peaks, according to Kluge, it is necessary to consider ways in which these peaks can be prevented. He calls on health authorities to carefully reconsider easing measures.
