Elise Mertens Elise Mertens and Su Wei Hsieh qualified for the doubles final at the WTA Finals. The Belgian-Taiwanese duo settled into the semi-finals with Japanese pair Oyama/Shibahara.
Shoko Aoyama and Ina Shibhara were the second seed in Mexico, but the Japanese duo clearly did not match Elise Mertens and Su Wei Hsieh in the semi-finals.
Thanks to two breaks, Mertens and Hsieh on steam led by 5-1 in the first set. The Japanese ladies managed to shed their first two points in the seventh inning, but Mertens and Hsieh finished it off in the next game. After more than half an hour the score was 6-2.
Also in Group 2, Aoyama and Shibahara had to take a break twice early, although the Japanese also took a serve from the opponent between them. But Mertens and Hsieh were in charge of the game and didn’t let their prey slip away anymore.
The first match point was the right spot on the spot. After Hsieh was dispatched, the return of the Japanese fell into the net. Mertens and Hsieh can now prepare for the final against Barbora Krezhikova and Katerina Siniakova. The Czech duo were still very strong in the group stage. revenge time?
