Big loss in the Republican primary, who voted to impeach Trump | Abroad

Russell Fry, the candidate backed by former US President Donald Trump, defeated long-serving Representative Tom Rice in the Republican primary for a seat in the US House of Representatives on behalf of a South Carolina county.

Fry’s victory is seen as a major victory for Trump. After all, Rice had voted to impeach Trump for his role in the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Since then, Rice has been one of the former president’s primary targets.

Fry will face an as-yet-unidentified Democratic candidate in the November 8 midterm elections. He is expected to easily win the seat on behalf of the usually Republican district.

Trump was less pleased with the results of the Republican primary in coastal South Carolina, which includes Charleston. There, Trump-backed Katie Arrington was defeated by Representative Nancy Mays. The latter infuriated Trump in 2021 by voting to endorse Joe Biden’s electoral gains.

Mays, who is backed by former UN ambassador Nikki Haley, will likely reserve her seat on November 8th: her district usually votes Republican, too.
