Fluvius must urgently inspect 35,000 digital gas meters due to connectivity issue: 'But the chance of a leak is very small' | local

Many Fluvius customers have received a letter in the past few weeks stating that their natural gas meter needs to be checked urgently. “Samples show that with this type of meter, the connection loosens in very exceptional circumstances, so the seal between the connection pipe and the gas meter no longer closes completely,” the letter said. However, according to Fluvius spokesman Björn Verdot, there is no reason to panic. “A leak can only occur if the meter is pushed hard,” he says.

This concerns a total of 35,000 Fluvius digital gas meters installed in the period from the end of October 2022 to mid-March 2023. The connection problem may lead to leakage in these meters in exceptional cases.

“A leak can only occur if the meter is pushed hard,” says Verdot, who stresses that there is no reason to panic. During installation, technicians always check if the meter is not leaking. It seems that “this also happened with these counters.”

Although the chance of leakage during normal use is very small, Fluvius doesn't want to risk it. “Because safety comes first and because these gas meters should last for many years, we visited all the homes and apartments in which we installed this type of gas meter between the end of October last year and mid-March of this year,” says Verdot.

Checks

Fluvius customers who received a letter can schedule an appointment online or by phone. Technicians will then come to see if the seal loosens when the meter is pushed. “If so, we apply additional sealant or install a new meter,” explains Verdoudt. “In both cases, the meter must be removed from the connection pipe. The customer, of course, will not be able to use gas for a period of time.” The examination takes one hour.

Currently, 30,000 affected customers have been notified, and the last 5,000 will receive messages in the coming weeks. Fluvius also inspected 2,600 gas meters. The network operator aims to conduct all checks by spring 2024.
