Team Europe has made a great start to the 44th Ryder Cup. After the first day of prestigious golf competition, the Europeans lead 6.5-1.5 against Team America. In the morning session, Europe was on top and they won all their matches.
The US recovered somewhat in the afternoon session. For long periods the US seemed to be holding on for a point or two, but Europe bounced back in the final holes. Team USA did not win a single match in the so-called match play format played in the Ryder Cup.
A point and a half for the US is three draws.
Alarm started in Rome. At 7.35am the golfers started the first holes in the sun. As the gates opened at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, thousands of golf fans flocked to the grandstands to get the best spot.
There was a football-like atmosphere in the stands, with European fans in particular cheering loudly on their continental counterparts. Tennis player Novak Djokovic also supported his home team in Italy. Here and there, fans from America stood dressed in stars and stripes, but there were plenty of them. And you can hear it. The European fans continued to cheer and cheer on the American fans.
