Gregg Berhalter is back as the US national team coach after a thirty-year trial Foreign football

The U.S. Soccer Association has confirmed that Greg Berhalter, 49, will return as the national coach of the U.S. Soccer team. The coach will lead the U.S. soccer team during the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Berhalter retired as national team coach at the end of last year after the Netherlands beat the USA in the World Cup quarter-finals in Qatar. He came out in January with the story of kicking his wife during a heated argument thirty years ago.

He was intimidated by this during the World Cup. Amazingly, this was done by his former childhood friend and teammate Claudio Reyna (49), whom he had known for nearly forty years. His son Giovanni Reina (20), a 112-time international from Borussia Dortmund, was disappointed not to play at the World Cup in Qatar. The U.S. Soccer Association announced an investigation after the riots during the World Cup.

Berhalter was released in March and told he could return as national coach. The association has not yet appointed another coach. Brian Joseph Callaghan was equally effective as the interim coach of the US team. He saw the buzz last night in an ever-rich match against Mexico (a 3-0 win), who will co-host the 2026 World Cup with Canada and the United States.

US Soccer Director of Sports Matt Crocker calls Berhalter the right person for the job with his vision and experience and looks forward to a renewed partnership. The national coach thanked him for his faith in him. “I am grateful to be given the opportunity to build on our World Cup performance and contribute to this exciting time for football in our country.”

Berhalter has been mentioned in recent days as a possible candidate to succeed Maurice Steijn at Sparta Rotterdam, where he was still a player from 1996 to 1998. The former New Jersey defender also played for PEC Zwolle and Cambuur. Steyn begins work at Ajax after signing a three-year contract at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Wednesday.
