to updateAt least 61 migrants are missing and presumed dead after a large ship sank off the coast of Libya, the International Organization for Migration said. Rescue workers were able to move some passengers to safety. In all, there would have been about 86 people on board.
According to the International Organization for Migration, the ship that left the coastal city of Zuwara, dozens of kilometers from the border with Tunisia, was unable to withstand the high waves in the Mediterranean Sea.
A total of 25 people were rescued and transferred to a Libyan detention center in Tariq al-Sikka near Tripoli. They were all in good health.
Tunisia and Libya are the two countries through which most migrants cross to Europe. According to a spokesman for the International Organization for Migration, at least 2,250 people have died this year alone during this dangerous crossing. During the same period, 153,000 people arrived in Italy from one of these two countries.
