The 2023 road season is almost over, but for now we can still enjoy the Italian fall classics. On Tuesday it was the turn of Tre Valli Varesine (1.Pro). In this tough hill race, Tadej Pogar defends his title. The main competition comes from Jumbo-Visma, which includes the duo of Primož Roglič-Wout van Aert. Cycling Looking forward!

date

The Tre Valli Varesine, like other Italian fall races such as the Giro dell’Emilia, Tour of Lombardy and Gran Piemonte, is very old. The competition has already received one hundred copies. This year we are ready for the 102nd edition. Gino Bartali, Fausto Coppi, Fiorenzo Magni, Gaston Nencini, Gianni Motta, Francesco Moser, Giuseppe Sarrone, among others, are included in the list of honors for the one-day race. Motta and Saronni share the record with four wins each.

It was no surprise that host nation Italy recorded the most victories since the first edition in 1919. The home rider won 87 out of 101 times. Those other 14 winners? They are Germain Derecki, Willy Vanitsen, Eddy Merckx, Gregor Brawn, Pascal Richard, Fabian Wegmann, Daniel Martin, David Filo, Kristjan Durasek, Michael Albasini, Alexander Jenes, Toms Skoges, Primoz Roglic and Tadej Bujar. So there are three Belgians on the honors list, and no Dutchman (yet).

Tre Valli Varesine was held in 2020 under the name Gran Trittico Lombardo. This race was a combination of Tre Valli Varesine, Coppa Bernocchi and Coppa Agostoni as a result of the Corona crisis. Gorka Izagirre won this only edition, which had almost the same final as Tre Valli Varesine.

Latest edition

In the latest edition of Tre Valli Varesine we saw a leading group of ten in the opening hours. This includes Daryl Impey and Quentin Hermans. In the peloton, AG2R Citroën and Movistar led the chase ahead of Benoît Cosnefroy and Enric Mas respectively. The latter had recently won the Giro dell’Emilia.

Forty kilometers from the finish, the last four escapees, including Hermans, were recaptured. Alessandro De Marchi, the winner last year, then opened the debates, but he did not escape. Then two other isolated people also made an attempt: First Jay FineThen Tim Wellens. However, UAE, the future team of both Fine and Wellens, closed the gap both times. The team from the Middle East clearly did nothing when its rider, Davide Formolo, spun off on the last lap Daniel Felipe Martinez And Jesus HerradaBut this trio did not succeed either.

Later on the final lap, we saw acceleration from 21-year-old Tom Gloag, who was accompanied by Mass, but the peloton also called this duo back into the game. The latest to try to avoid sprinting with a weak peloton was Vincenzo Nibali. Now it was Movistar who led the chase and deffused the attack. Alejandro Valverde should have finished the race, but the Spaniard failed in the sprint against Tadej Pojar. Sergio Higuita is located between the Spaniard and the Slovenian and managed to take the podium in second place.

Effect

The Tre Valli Varesine route has a total length of 196.7 kilometers and contains 24 climbs with an elevation gain of approximately 3,500 metres. The one-day race traditionally starts on Tuesday in Busto Arsizio, the southernmost town of the province of Varese. From there the peloton runs in a straight line north, where the provincial capital, Varese, is located. After about forty kilometers, the riders reach the finish line for the first time. What follows is a 12.9 km local circuit that must be completed eight times.

This tour begins with a climb Montello (2 km at 5.2%, with peaks up to 10%) Which is followed by a descent in two parts. After this descent, the riders begin Climb Caspino (2.5 km, 4.9%). This takes the riders back to the finish line near Piazza Montegrappa. Once this circuit has been completed eight times, there are still over fifty kilometers to the finish line.

The final 25 km circuit is not much different from the previous round. Montello has been listed again, but this time Morosolo (1.6 km, 7.8%) He went up. This immediately changes to Casiago (1.8 km, 5%). The descent from Casciago then leads to Casbeno and the end. This circuit will be visited twice in the final.

Favorite

It is often difficult to predict how the final of the Tre Valli Varesine will go. An individual can prevail alone, but sprinting a relatively large group is not impossible either. Take last year, when at least twenty people came to the meeting together. Tadej Pogacar Then he proved to be the fastest. The Slovenian is now one of the favorites again, but the front-runner? not this. After the Giro dell’Emilia Primoz Roglic Advantage for us.

In that Giro dell’Emila, Roglič defeated compatriot Pogačar in a straight duel. The Jumbo-Visma leader achieved astonishing acceleration in the last few hundred meters and his opponent from the United Arab Emirates had nothing to answer for. Roglič 1, Pogačar 0. When it comes to victories in Tre Valli Varesine, the two are on equal footing. While Bogar cruised to victory last year, Roglic was the best in 2019 after a late exit.

For Roglic, who confirmed on Saturday that he will be leaving Jumbo-Visma this winter, the Giro del Emilia was his first race since the Vuelta a España. It is clear that the 33-year-old Slovenian has been able to continue his form from the last big tour of the year. Pogačar is now under construction again, which is also directly reflected in its results. 4th in the Giro della Toscana, 3rd in the Sabatini Cup, 2nd in the Giro della Emilia, 1st in… Tri Valley Friesen?

The two-time Tour winner will have to contend with the Jumbo-Visma tandem. Because yes, there is also a Roglič next to Primož Woot Fan Art At the beginning of the Dutch formation. The Belgian is preparing for the World Clay Court Championships in Veneto in the Bernocchi Trophy and Tri-Vallee-Warezen. In that first race, he immediately came out on top, following a dominant performance by his team. Will Van Aert score his second win in three days at Tri-Valley Fares? He should be able to get far here as well. Especially if we get another sprint from a mini peloton.

Tiesj Benoot and Attila Valter are also on Jumbo-Visma’s provisional start list. By far the best team to start with, as you usually say. But in this case we are not completely sure. In addition to Bujarcár, Emirates also includes Davide Formolo, Rafal Majka, Jay Fine, Juan Ayuso, and Diego Olise, Adam Yates on me.

Judging by his performance in the Giro dell’Emilia, Ayuso appears to be a bit exhausted after his fourth-place finish in the Vuelta a España. This does not apply to Ulissi (sixth in the Agostoni Cup), but he will likely be at Bujar’s service again, despite the fact that he often performs well in the Tri-Valley Faresin. Yeats also sacrificed himself at the Giro del Emilia Boogie, who was unable to complete this work. Perhaps the UAE will take a different tack on Tuesday and Yates, a recent winner of the Montreal Cycling Grand Prix, will get the chance to compete.

twin Simon Yates He will undoubtedly compete for trophies again, just like in the Giro dell’Emilia. In that match, Jaiko Al-Ula’s spearhead came in third place. He finished four places ahead Richard CarapazWho will be happy to end a difficult year with victory. He is already in good shape again after his heavy fall in the opening stage of the Tour de France. The Ecuadorian also attended the Giro della Toscana (second) and the Sabatini Cup (seventh).

We’ve also seen it at the Giro dell’Emilia Alexander Vlasov And Enrique Mas San Luca breaks into the elite group. They both have the Vuelta in their legs, and clearly still have some left in the tank after that round. Vlasov also has a good sprint that he can only achieve in Varese.

To that city you will Toms Scogginch By the way, we cherish the good memories. The Latvian has already stood on the podium at Tre Valli Varesine twice. In 2019, he finished third, having won the previous year. Now Skujiņš is ready for another adventure. The 32-year-old is doing well this fall, including an eighth place at the World Championships in Glasgow and a 13th place at the European Championships in Drenthe.

We also saw a strong performance in that European Championship Andreas Krohn. The Dane got to the offensive end and put himself at the service of Mads Pedersen on the final lap, but was unable to finish the race. Krohn himself crossed the line in ninth place. Just under a month ago, he also won the first stage of the Vuelta. Two years ago, the drill finished fifth in the Tre Valli Varesine.

Finally, we also mention the names of Pavel Sivakov (INEOS Grenadiers), Lorenzo Rota (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), Jay Hindley, Lenard Kamna (BORA-hansgrohe), Benoit Cosnefroy, Ben O’Connor (AG2R Citroën), Jesús Herrada. (Cofidis), Julien Alaphilippe (Soudal Quick Step), Clement Chambourcin, Warren Barguil (Arkia-Samsic), Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek), Romain Bardet (Team DSM-Fermenich) ).
