Racing Genk's complaint comes to nothing: The match against Anderlecht should not be replayed after a penalty farce

Anderlecht – Racing Genk will never be played again. The referees' management dismissed Limberger's team's complaint because they believed it was human error. Genk still has the option to appeal this decision to the Belgian Court of Arbitration for Sport (BAS).

Then human error.

The refereeing department ruled that there was no incorrect application of the regulations in the penalty phase of the match Anderlecht – Genk.

Last Friday's session did not provide any clarity. Although the Purple & White then claimed that VAR had ignored Jari Verschauren based on communication with the referee.

“The hearing showed that the referees were aware of the regulations and made an error in the evaluation,” lawyer Walter Damen said at the time. “It seems to me that this is the maximum Jenk can get out of this.”

The referees' management now follows this logic as well.

“The Professional Refereeing Department (PRD) dealt with the complaint regarding the match between Anderlecht and Genk on 12/23/2023, and Genk stated in its complaint that there was a referee error in applying the rules of the game, and requested that the match be replayed,” she said in a statement.

“Representatives of the clubs concerned were heard, as were the referees and video assistant referees involved.”

“After deliberation, the Party of the Democratic Revolution ruled today that it was an arbitration error in assessing the reality of the match. And that no error was committed in applying the rules of the game.”

“Therefore, the cases will not be transferred to the Professional Football Disciplinary Board. This means that the matches will not be replayed and that the procedures at the German Football Association have finally been completed.”

“There is no possibility of appeal to a disciplinary body of the Belgian Football Association, but it is possible to resort to the Belgian Court of Arbitration for Sport.”

It remains to be seen whether KRC Genk will make this move. “We are currently internally considering possible next steps. Until then, we do not wish to discuss the details of this statement any further,” Limburg said.
