to updateThe home city of the Ukrainian participants in the Eurovision Song Contest was hit by Russia on Saturday night before the band started performing in Liverpool. The Tvorchi duo reported it and it was confirmed to the BBC.
On Saturday evening, several Russian missiles hit the city of Ternopil, in western Ukraine. Two people were wounded, according to what the head of the region’s government told the BBC. The mayor of Ternopil confirms that the warehouses were damaged in the attack.
Ten minutes before their performance at the Liverpool Arena, pop duo Tvorchy wrote on Instagram that their city was under attack. After that, they confirmed: “Ternopil is the name of our city bombed by Russia while we sang on the stage of Eurovision about our steel hearts, stubbornness and willpower.” They also called on Europe to unite against war: “Europe, unite against evil for peace!”
Air raid sirens were heard across much of Ukraine on Saturday night. The alarms went off simultaneously at the start of the Eurovision Song Contest final in Liverpool.
Last year, the Ukrainian Kalush Orchestra won the award with the song “Stefania”. According to the official rules of the Eurovision Song Contest, the event is organized each year by the country that won the previous year. However, because of the war with Russia, it would be very dangerous to hold the Song Festival in Ukraine. Because of this, the event has been moved to the United Kingdom, which finished second last year.
A message appeared on the Ukrainian state app Dija about the live broadcast of the final. The letter also included a message addressed to the fleeing Ukrainians: “Don’t forget to vote for our people when you are in Europe.”
In Ukraine itself, the cultural channel of the Public Radio broadcast the show.
Russia is not allowed to participate in Eurosong 2023.
