The Chinese government is studying possible measures to address addiction to short videos in young people. These videos are distributed by Chinese technology companies such as ByteDance (TikTok) and Tencent.
The government body responsible for information held a meeting last week on this issue. Ways to increase oversight of the sector were discussed. The agency called for the “healthy development” of the video sector and called for quality improvement.
The agency did not name any companies. In a short statement it was said that it was necessary to prevent minors from spending too much time on it. It is not clear whether concrete measures will follow.
In 2021, the Chinese government suddenly introduced a game limit: children are only allowed to play games for three hours a week. Thus, it attacked large Chinese companies such as Tencent and NetEase.
The format of short videos, known to us from TikTok, has become very popular all over the world in recent years. Teenagers in particular gobble them up.
