US sources indicate that weapons and other equipment belonging to the Afghan security forces are now under the control of the Taliban. An exact list of where all military equipment is located is not available. Jake Sullivan, US President Joe Biden’s security adviser, acknowledged this during a press conference at the White House on Tuesday.

The United States has provided a lot of military equipment to the Afghan security forces for years. This was also the case with the expansion of the Afghan Air Force. But now that the extremist Islamist Taliban movement has seized power in the country, this is materially in their hands.

The Taliban had already broadcast a video two days ago showing the Afghan Army’s Black Hawk helicopters at Kandahar airport. “The Black Hawks were not delivered to the Taliban,” Sullivan said. It was intended for the Afghan armed forces at the request of now-fugitive President Ashraf Ghani.

“President Joe Biden chose to accept the request, despite realizing that there was a risk that the aircraft might one day fall into the hands of the Taliban,” the statement read.
