The trial of Iranian singer Mehdi Yarahi after his song against compulsory hijab: “Let your hair go” | outside

Yarahi released a single on August 25, titled “Rosarito”, which is Persian for “your veil”. Two days later, the Iranian judiciary announced that “a lawsuit was filed against him because of an illegal song that contradicts the morals and customs of the Islamic community.”

The song’s music video features dancing women being encouraged to remove their mandatory headscarves. The singer dedicated the song to the “courageous Iranian women” who took part in the protests following the death of Mahsa Amini. The 22-year-old died almost a year ago after her arrest because she would not have worn her hijab according to the regulations.

Mehdi Yarahi regularly defends the protests on his Instagram page. In October last year, he released “Sorod Zane” (“Woman’s Song”), which has become a chant for protesters, especially in universities.

During his performances, he regularly criticizes the authorities, mainly for discriminating against the people of Khuzestan, a province in the southwest of the country. At the moment he has not been arrested yet.
