The two ducks are made by the Dutch artist Florentin Hofmann and are no less than 18 meters high. Since 2007, Hofmann has sent his Rubber Duck series artwork on a world tour. Ten years ago, Hong Kong also had such a duck on the ground. This time the duckling brought a friend, though he didn’t survive long.
As in our country, it was very hot in Hong Kong today. At 11 o’clock it was already 29 degrees, and that turned out to be too hot for one of the inflatable ducks. Crowds of Hong Kongers and tourists flocked to admire the yellow giants. But many who arrived in the afternoon found only one of the two intact.
The organizers state that the duck succumbed to the heat and high air pressure. And they wrote on social media: “It was decided to release the air immediately by loosening the seams to avoid any possible danger.” The duck was taken in for repair.
Hoffman wanted to bring some cheer to the city with his giant duck. “Double ducks, double happiness,” says the artist. But Snow Wong, an office worker in Hong Kong, wonders if double happiness is really possible in Hong Kong. “And if you look at the duck, you might find your answer,” Wong thought.
