Title 42 Expires Wednesday: What Does It Mean for US Immigration?

Unless the Supreme Court rules otherwise, Title 42 will expire on Wednesday. It is an executive order introduced by the Trump administration in March 2020 to protect the United States from the influx of Covid-affected immigrants.

Why is this important?

Immigration is the lifeblood of American society. Immigrants contribute to America’s technological, scientific, and business progress and strengthen the labor market. Yet immigration remains a point of contention between Republicans and Democrats.

In the news: In March 2020, President Trump announced an emergency measure that allowed asylum-seekers at the US southern border to be deported without further notice to their country of origin or to Mexico.

  • The move should keep the U.S. fully quarantined for the influx of Covid-affected residents from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.
  • Title 42 was supposed to expire in May 2022, but a Louisiana state court blocked it.
