‘A day like any other’ at Charleroi airport despite Ryanair strike internal

There was calm on Tuesday at Charleroi airport, despite the cancellation of 44 flights due to the strike by the Belgian Ryanair pilots. This was stated by the CEO of Brussels South Charleroi Airport (BSCA) Philippe Verdonk on Tuesday.

Verdonk said the second day of the strike at Ryanair “is a day like any other”. “There are no strikers present, just the passengers who no longer have an eye on the actions, but sympathize with the people who can’t leave.”

“Our aim is to strongly influence Ryanair’s operations and we have succeeded,” said Didier Lippi, permanent secretary of the Christian trade union CNE. “But if the CEO wants us to come to the airport and convince the few colleagues present to stop working, we will.”

“The aim is not to harass passengers by telling them at 6 am that their flight has been cancelled. That is why we follow the principle of giving seven days advance notice, so that passengers do not come to the airport for nothing,” said Libby, who speaks of “a form of respect.” .

Pay and rest time

Belgian pilots for the Irish low-cost airline are still demanding their wages back after cuts made during the coronavirus pandemic. They also point to problems with their rest time. Despite numerous meetings, no way out of the impasse has yet been found.

This summer, two Belgian pilots went on strike over the weekend of July 15-16 and July 29-30.

On Monday and Tuesday, 44 flights were canceled at Charleroi Airport, which represents a total of 88 canceled flights on the two days of the strike.
