Eight out of ten Flemish people rarely or never feel unsafe in their neighborhood

In spring 2023, 35% of Flemish people indicated that they never felt unsafe in the neighborhood or area in which they live, and 44% rarely felt unsafe. This was evident from the figures released by Statistics Flanders on Friday based on a survey of more than 6,000 Flemish people aged 18 and over.

Whether or not someone avoids certain places in their residence also indicates their feeling of safety. In 2023, 47% indicated that they never avoided certain places in their municipality or city, and 31% rarely did so. On the other hand, 22% sometimes, often, or always avoid certain places.

Between 2021 and 2022, the proportion of people who rarely or never feel unsafe decreased (from 79 to 76 percent). The proportion of people who rarely or never avoid places was slightly lower in 2022 than in 2021 (from 79 to 75 percent). However, in 2023, the numbers are back to roughly the same level as they were in 2021.

Comparable figures on feelings of safety and avoidance behavior are not available for the period prior to 2021.
