“I couldn’t keep working like this. I don’t want to have any accidents on my conscience.” Jos* (56) has been working for a long time on building a new prestige project in Ghent. Until a few months ago he could no longer come to terms with the insecure situations caused by the tangle of small businesses there. Building promoter Democo, who was a former head of Jut when a school collapsed in Antwerp, works with more than 1,000 companies in total. “You get the feeling that people are really playing with their lives.” Our research cell spoke to whistleblowers, subcontractors, and the building promoter himself.
