Lawyers for Navalny, critic of the Kremlin, in pretrial detention: “An attempt to isolate him completely” | outside

to updateThree lawyers for jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny were jailed on Friday after raids by Russian security services. Earlier, it was learned that house searches were carried out in an “extremism” case that carries severe penalties.

Searches were conducted at the homes of Vadim Kobzev, Igor Sergunin and Alexei Liptser, who defended Navalny. They were remanded in custody in the early evening until at least December 13.

One of the refugees linked to the opposition leader, Leonid Volkov, previously said on Twitter that the lawyers were accused of being members of an “extremist community,” a crime he said carried a six-year prison sentence.

Georgi Alburov, another refugee employee, criticized the X programme, saying: “The main goal is to deprive Alexei Navalny of legal support and relations with the outside world.”

Alexei Navalny was arrested in January 2021 upon his return to Russia after being poisoned. Since then, he has been sentenced to harsh sentences, most recently, in August, to 19 years in prison on charges of “extremism.”

His organizations were also banned in June 2021 on charges of “extremism” and most of their activists were forced to leave the country to avoid prosecution.

Navalny, who is being held in a staff camp not far from Moscow, said in late September that he would be transferred for a year to a cell with very strict conditions, where his interaction with the outside world would be more limited.

Navalny communicates mainly through letters he sends to his lawyers and then posts on his social networks, where he continues to condemn the attack in Ukraine in recent months and calls on Russians to “resist” the Kremlin.

“Lawyers do not do politics, they defend the accused,” Vyacheslav Ghemadi, head of the legal department of Navalny’s team, responded to X on Friday.
