NASA unveils a rocket to take astronauts to the moon again

NASA has moved its new rocket system to the Cape Canaveral launch site. The system, which consists of a “Space Launch System” rocket and an “Orion” capsule, ejected from a transport vehicle Thursday evening local time.

At 9:15 a.m. Friday morning, the nearly 100-meter-long rocket reached the launch site in Cape Canaveral. Several tests are still on the list before the unmanned system is first tested in May at the earliest.

The Artemis mission aims to land American astronauts on the Moon again by 2024 for the first time in nearly 50 years. Due to various delays, this mission has been postponed until 2025 at the earliest, the task is to put four astronauts into orbit with the Orion capsule, after which two of them will transfer to the SpaceX lander for the final path to the Moon.

“The Artemis generation is poised to reach new heights,” said Bill Nelson of NASA. “This generation will return astronauts to the moon and this time we will land the first woman and first person of color to the surface to do pioneering work in science,” he said. “NASA’s Artemis program will pave the way for mankind’s great leap in future missions to Mars.”
