When Biden visits Northern Ireland next week, British representatives are expected to lobby their American counterparts to resume talks. UK Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Kemi Badenoch is leading the way in reaching a trade deal.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s government says it will be a deal his Conservative party has long maintained is one of the biggest benefits of leaving the European Union. Negotiations took place under the administration of former President Donald Trump, but they have bled under Biden.

The United Kingdom wants to draw up a roadmap for a multi-stage deal. The first step would be a formal agreement that would include topics virtually approved under Trump, such as creating more opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses.

Later, negotiations will take place on unresolved issues that have nothing to do with market access. That access was saved for the last and most difficult step. The issue of market access and tariff reduction on goods promises to be politically and technically very difficult.
