Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen will also visit the US during her Latin American tour. A meeting with Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy will also be on the menu, although Taiwanese officials are unwilling to confirm it (yet). China calls the US suspension a “provocation”.

Tsai Ing-wen left on Wednesday for a 10-day foreign visit. It takes her to Guatemala and Belize, but also to America. After the first stop in New York, the Taiwanese president will also stop in Los Angeles on his return.

McCarthy has already announced that he will meet with Tsai Ing-wen later.

A meeting with McCarthy’s predecessor, Nancy Pelosi, in 2022 sparked strong protests from China, which views Taiwan as a renegade province and does not regard it as an independent country. China is now talking about a “provocation”.

The trip to Guatemala and Belize is important to Tsai Ing-wen because both countries are part of the select group that recognizes Taiwan’s independence. Another Central American country, Honduras, cut ties with Taiwan last weekend in favor of China.
