The European Union and the United States have entered into new, tougher privacy agreements that make it possible to re-exchange European personal data. Previous courts were set aside by European courts for failing to adequately protect Europeans.
The policy was signed Friday by visiting President Ursula van der Leyen and US President Joe Biden in Brussels. The agreement will allow data such as posts on social media or the employee management of a branch of an American company in the EU to move freely back to the United States.
Negotiations on new, tougher rules have been dragging on for almost two years. Brussels rejected the previous US proposal. Businesses are beginning to realize the lack of contracts and large American Internet companies are already signaling their departure from the EU. So far, many companies have not complied with the European Court of Justice ruling and regulators have largely forgiven it. But recently, regulators like the Dutch Data Protection Authority have begun to act more aggressively.
